The Critique assignment has two options for students to choose from, attending a theatrical performance or looking at visual art. Students will either attend a virtual theatrical performance or an online art museum of their choice, and will write a critique of either the theatrical production, or of one piece of visual art in the art museum. To be considered a theatrical production, the performance must have a plot, costumes, sets, and actors. Recitals, concerts, and stand-up comedy performances do not meet the criteria for this assignment. School plays, church plays, local community theater performances and professional theater performances do meet the criteria of this assignment. If you choose the visual art option, the artwork must be in a museum. It is up to you which museum you select, but it should be one that offers a virtual tour so you can select from a variety of pieces. Of course, considering the pandemic, these selections must be made according to what is available online. This may take some time to research, so don’t put it off until the last minute. Once the student has chosen and attended either a theatrical performance or a museum, the student will write an essay critiquing what he or she has seen according to the following criteria: Theatrical Performance Critique Introductory paragraph should include the name of the performance and the location you attended. The second paragraph should include a brief summary of the storyline. The third paragraph should express your opinion on the set design. The fourth paragraph should express your opinion on the costumes. The fifth paragraph should express your opinion on the acting quality. The final paragraph should include your overall opinion of the performance. Visual Art Critique The introductory paragraph should include the name of the piece of art and the name of the artist, if known. Also include the name of the museum or gallery. The second paragraph should be a detailed description of the piece of art, including the artwork’s genre. The third paragraph should address some specific features of the artwork. (Consider use of color, line, perspective and shading.) The fourth paragraph should include your personal reaction to the piece. Why did you choose this piece? What does it remind you of or inspire you to consider? The final paragraph should include your overall opinion of the piece.
