Speech Writing

PCOM 6000 Speech Writing Assignment:To write a commencement speech for Richard J. Helldobler, president of William Paterson University, to be delivered at the Dec. 15, 2020 virtual Zoom graduation.Due: Oct. 29. In the dropbox. EACH STUDENT WILL READ THEIR SPEECH IN CLASS.Length: 6-7 minutes. Practice the speech, read it out loud to an audience, you’ll catch mistakes.Audience: Graduating seniors, their family, faculty, staff and studentsSpecial Note: WPU does not actually have a December graduation, but we’re going to imagine one. This is a joyous occasion, as all graduations are, and the speech should reflect that, but be realistic. We’re in unprecedented times and these graduates will have spent the last seven months in some form of quarantine, masked while in public and in school, learning and working from home and worried not just about the usual things all new grads face, but about a world health emergency that has killed more than 200,000 across the nation and more than 1 million worldwide.Things to think about: What advice would you give them (If any)? What have they learned over the last four years (and over the last seven months) that will help them manage, not just now, but in the future? Why are you proud of them? You’ve all sat through graduations – either yours or someone else’s – that have been either inspiring or a drudge. Which one would you want to write?Things to remember:• The speech is not about you.• You want to capture the voice of the person you’re writing for. What is the style of the speech? Do they pause? Do they use big words? Are they down to earth?o Remember what Prof. Moore noted about President Helldobler: “He’s gregarious, he’s a theater major.”• Who is your audience at a college graduation, who are you addressing?o Put yourself in the shoes of the speaker AND the audience.o This is a general audience, they may not be familiar with the Universityo You want to win these people over, you’re also doing PR for the school, • What are your goals for the speech?• Your speech should include a welcome to the attendees, there’s a special way to do this. It’s fairly formal. I show you this not so you’ll copy it, but so you have an idea of how to include the right information for your speech.Speech Writing techniques;• Intentional repetition: (Ten years ago I did x; 10 years ago I did y, 10 years ago I…)• The rule of three (First I went to the store, then the bank, then came home…)• Sensory description: “I remember standing on the wind swept plain…” this brings a scene to life if it’s appropriate to the setting• Numbers are important: How many how are graduating? Is it the biggest class? (I’ll get you some recent facts), is there a new class of majors?• Keep your sentence relatively short• Appropriate ending: What happens after the president finishes speaking? Who comes or what comes after the president speaks – he will need to segway into it.Resources: These are not the only resources I’d consult if writing this assignment, but they speak to two of the areas Prof. Moore discussed in her lecture.Videos:Richard J.
