For your final project, you will be asked to use the course materials and conversations to construct an “intervention.” Many people read or talk about police violence and feel overwhelmed by their inability to do anything about it. Here’s our chance to challenge the notion that we cannot do anything. Your assignment is to construct an intervention in whatever field or methodology feels most compelling to you. It can be a policy memo, a song, a documentary, organizing a protest, writing a letter to your local newspaper editor, rewriting a bad legal policy—whatever moves you. Alongside of your intervention, you will turn in a 5-7 page paper explaining how your intervention relates and is inspired by the course materials. You may work on this intervention alone or in pairs or groups. It’s up to you. Just be sure you are observing proper quarantine etiquette if you’re working with a group. And if you do an intervention as a group, your paper must still be individual. What I expect from the intervention:1) It must be an action of some sort that you document. If you are organizing a rally, take pictures. If you are helping people go vote, record a short video of the experience with them. If you are educating young people, write a lesson plan that you share with me. In other words, I need to see clear evidence of the intervention.2) It must be completed by November 27, so that you have time to write accompanying paper.3) Your intervention plan must be approved by me! Please post your proposed intervention to Discussions under Activist Intervention no later than Monday, November 2. I will reply to you to let you know you are approved or to ask you to make an appointment with me to discuss further. For those of you who have already email me, if you could also please post to the Discussion, I would appreciate it.What I expect from the accompanying paper:1) It demonstrates that you have listened to/watched the course materials and used the things you have learned from them to consider your activist intervention. There should be quotes from the materials (with proper citation). You must use AT LEAST 4 different course materials.2) It describes your intervention in detail: your plan, how the course materials inspired your ideas about an intervention, how you carried it out, what you expected, what ended up happening. Are there any follow up steps you hope to take that aren’t part of the class?3) It is 5-7 pages in Times New Roman, size 12, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins. This does not include the works cited page.If you have any questions, please let me know. This project is 40% of your grade, so please put thought, time, and effort into it!
