Students will select and attend (remotely, as needed) at least 2 policymaking meetings* of the Texas Legislature or other policymaking or policy implementation meeting, for a minimum of one hour each. The type of meetings and topics of interest are up to the prerogative of the student, though they should relate to social welfare topics covered in the course. Consider opportunities at the Texas Legislature and beyond, such as City Council meetings, County Commissioner meetings, school board meetings, state agency (such as DFPS, DSHS, HHSC) hearings. The instructor will periodically announce upcoming opportunities that meet the requirement of this assignment, though students are responsible for actively seeking out opportunities. Students will write a 2-page reflection paper describing what they observed and learned. Additional guidance and resources will be provided during class and via Canvas. I Chose this 2 links on the top for you to reflect on……. Its one video and a presentation on Austin Public Safety Budget, and the Oversight of the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice.   Consider these questions in your reflection: What did you observe? Describe in detail the setting, people (and their roles), and circumstances you observed. Discuss any problems that you encountered with access, the process and strategies employed. (In other words, if this forum was designed to educate the public on an issue or to bring in the public’s perspective, how accessible was it?) Describe the policies and/or services discussed. What perspectives/opinions were represented? Missing? Based on your observations, formulate two separate ways a policy advocate might have (or did) impact the setting, people, or circumstances. Reference any readings from class that are relevant to the observed meeting or initiative.
