Modern American History

This is the first week of our final unit, which a specific focus on what defined American citizenship in at the turn of the twentieth century. This week we will focus on the relationship between citizenship and migration. First, we will discuss the ways that racial terror lynching was used by white Americans to oppress and eliminate the practice of Black citizenship. In particular we will look at the work done by reformer Ida B. Wells and compare her writings with reports about a lynching that occurred in Bryan County, Oklahoma. Racial terror lynchings prompted Blacks throughout the South to move North, a pattern known as the Great Migration. Blacks were not the only individuals moving into and across the United States during these decades. At the end of the nineteenth century, increasing numbers of central and southern European flowed into American cities along the Atlantic coast, and Asians – particularly Chinese individuals – moved into the west. This massive infusion of immigrants prompted calls for restricted immigration and severe discrimination against the Chinese.  SOURCES: 2 of these sources have to be used but you can add any outside source youd like http://werehistory.org/sympathy-for-the-ku-klux/ http://www.americanyawp.com/reader/19-american-empire/james-d-phelan-why-the-chinese-should-be-excluded-1901/ http://www.americanyawp.com/reader/19-american-empire/chinese-immigrants-confront-anti-chinese-prejudice-1885-1903/ https://www.americanyawp.com/reader/18-industrial-america/ida-b-wells-barnett-lynch-law-in-america-1900/ http://www.americanyawp.com/reader/19-american-empire/william-mckinley-on-american-expanionism-1903/ http://www.americanyawp.com/reader/19-american-empire/william-james-on-the-philippine-question-1903/ http://www.americanyawp.com/reader/17-conquering-the-west/chief-joseph-on-indian-affairs-1877-1879/ http://www.americanyawp.com/reader/17-conquering-the-west/laura-c-kellogg-on-indian-education-1913/ http://werehistory.org/south-carolinas-remarkable-democratic-experiment/
