Geographic Information Systems

Criminal intelligence or crime analysis typically focuses on the analysis of crime, criminals, victims, disorder, and other quality of life issues in local (i.e Terre Haute Police Department, Chicago Police Department, etc), federal (FBI, DHS, etc), and global level (INTERPOL, UNODC, etc). Another concept related to criminal intelligence is intelligence-led policing, which is driven by information and collected intelligence to predict future crime and criminal activities. This week, we will be focusing on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and GEOINT, which is a broad field including location-based data (geographically referenced activities) such as social, economic, political, environmental, and other factors. GIS allows us to capture, manage, analyze, and visualize geographical information. Therefore, GIS is a critical infrastructure for the GEOINT and law enforcement practices especially in strategic, tactical, and operational activities providing real-time data. Your task: You will be doing two practical assignments this week. Please follow the instructions. 1. Assignment on Crime Mapping GIS is used by several police departments and federal agencies. You should check NYPD, LAPD and Chicago Police Departments’ website to see their GIS and crime mapping applications, which are open to the public. When you visit one of these police departments’ websites, please download a crime map (specific time frame or specific crime(s) and location), and briefly discuss & share it with your post in Blackboard. Alternatively, you can check the following website, You can choose a state and a police department (would be better if you choose a mid or large size police department) from the right side of the website. Please create your crime map based on a certain date and location and share it in your discussion board (you can copy/paste the map into a word document or use the print screen button on your computer (prt scr) and then ctrl+v or shift+insert options (25 Points). Please note that you need to upload this assignment into your discussion board using INSERT/EDIT image which you can find it in the first row (third image from the left) in DB. First, you download it into your computer and then insert it into the discussion board (25 points) 2) Assignment on the National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW)  NSOPW is a public safety resource that provides the public with access to sex offender data nationwide. NSOPW is a partnership between the U.S. Department of Justice and state, territorial, and tribal governments, working together for the safety of adults and children. NSOPW is U.S. government Website that links public state, territorial, and tribal sex offender registries from one national search site. Anyone can use the website’s search tool to identify location information on sex offenders residing, working, and attending school not only in their own neighborhoods but in other nearby states and communities. Please go to the website and search for sex offenders living in an area of interest. The website shows the former sex offenders in any jurisdiction in the US including age, background, criminal offense, and other details including their pictures as “potential” criminals in the future. Search by an individual jurisdiction (left side of the web) by address, zip code, or city.  Please share the following information in your post (25 points) What is the jurisdiction or location that you search (Zip code and city)? How many sex offenders that you identify in a 3-mile circle? How do you assess this type of information, which is available to the public? (e.g., useful, unsafe, risky, deterrent, unethical, changing house market, or school rating systems etc.)?
