Guided Response: Review and respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts. Comment on their personal definitions of intelligence and add to the validity and clarity of this definition by referencing research that you utilized to compose your own definition.
Some researchers have proposed that intelligence is a single, general ability, while others argue that intelligence incorporates a range of aptitudes, skills and talents. Conduct some research on different definitions of intelligence and describe your findings. Debate the accuracy of various definitions and provide your own academic definition of intelligence?
While some psychologist propose have proposed that intelligence is a single, general ability, while others argue that intelligence incorporates a range of aptitudes, skills and talents, I have to agree with that. Let’s look at the IQ test for example, this test is one that captures your intelligence in many different ways such as capability skills and the ability to be able to problem solve. I also know Robert Sternberg believes we acquire our intelligence from the environment we choose and how we are able to deal with different difficult situations we come across in our lives.
While there are some tests you can take to find out your IQ, I fell these tests different aspect of the brain. Some will test your critical thinking ability, while others will test your verbal ability such as the multidimensional aptitude test. This test will test your common knowledge on a very specific particular topic. While the Intelligence Quotient will test your ability to problem solve and general knowledge you may have over all.
After researching different definitions of intelligence, I have found that there is not one single definition that can be given. I did find an article that provided different definitions from dictionaries and encyclopedias to definitions provided by psychologist. After reviewing several, ok maybe all that were listed, I chose a few that stood out most to me. “Individuals differ from one another in their ability to understand complex ideas, to adapt effectively to the environment, to learn from experience, to engage in various forms of reasoning, to overcome obstacles by taking thought.” American Psychological Association (Legg & Hutter, 2007, pg. 18) to me this definitions reflects that each of us are different, and will learn in different environments through experience and reasoning. Another definition I found was, “An intelligence is the ability to solve problems, or to create products, that are valued within one or more cultural settings.” H. Gardner, (Legg & Hunter, 2007, pg. 21.) Reflecting on this definition led me to believe that, in any given cultural setting we have the ability to adapt and problem solve. One common factor that I noticed was the word ability. To me this means, that we are able to learn to be creative, problem solve, adapt to different environments, and think rationally. I believe the basis for so many of these definitions have common factors, because there is truth to each definition. Not all of one description is going to fit each of us and our own thoughts and feelings.
My own academic definition of intelligence would be, a combination of strategies on how one interprets, reasoning, problem solving, certain types of behavior, and learning. We all learn in different ways with different strategies. Some learners are better in areas that others may struggle in. The key component is helping determine how one will process what they are being asked.
