Human Biology Capstone Research Project Background: The capstone research project will integrate the four major concepts of biology (i.e., cell biology, genetics, evolution, and ecology) into one research presentation over a topic of choice. Overall, it will be required that the capstone research project take the approach of a case study outlining a current issue which encompasses the major concepts of biology as outlined previously. During the second conference of the semester, students will discuss potential ideas with their instructor. Students will put together a research presentation over their pre-approved topic and present it to the rest of the class in the form of an oral presentation at the conclusion of the semester. General Guidelines: 1. The capstone research project MUST be over a topic that encompasses all four major concepts of biology and is a current issue within the field of biology 2. Research presentations must be a minimum of eight minutes long 3. Research presentations must have a slideshow (e.g., Google Slides, Microsoft Powerpoint) to serve as a visual aid No minimum or maximum slides for research presentation 4. Slideshows must have one slide dedicated for references to indicate sources of facts stated or cited in the research presentation Sources must be peer-reviewed literature or scientifically reliable sources 5. Citations must be included with any facts presented on slides or cited verbally Example for citing a fact presented on a slide: o Dizziness may be a sign of dementia (American Heart Association, 2018) Example for citing a fact verbally during the presentation o “According to the American Heart Association, dizziness may be a sign of dementia risk” 6. Overall, the total points possible to earn for your research presentation will be 150 points 100 points will be allotted toward the quality of the individual research presentation. Specifically, the grade earned will reflect the quality of work put into researching the given topic, scientific accuracy of material presented, and quality of presentation given to the class. Presentations will be given the last week of the course. 50 points will be allotted toward participation in a peer-review process of other people’s presentations in the class.
