For your paper, you are to choose a specific act of violence that has been covered by national media in the last 15 years. You will be focusing on the violent act itself as well as the victimization component for your paper. Please use the following outline for your paper: Introduction What will you be discussing in your paper? Introduce your reader to the topic, why it is important, and what you will be examining in the body of your paper. * The information below is about the violent act and victimization associated with it in general. Problem/Issue Describe the nature of the violent act you selected. What does it include? How is it defined? What is the scope of the problem? Provide some updated statistics and describe those statistics. Who is the most likely perpetrator for this type of offense? Why is this violent act a concern for society? Policy What sort of policies exist to deal with the offender of the violent act? What happens when individuals engage in this act? Has any legislation been enacted to deal with court/sentencing regarding offenders for this violent act? Has rehabilitation been utilized? Is it effective? Why or why not? What should be done, in your opinion, with these offenders? Support this with research. Victimization Describe the nature and extent of the victimization. Provide updated statistics for this type of victimization including prevalence and rate. Describe the victimization and the impact of victimization. Who is most often victimized? What sort of impact (physical, psychological, emotional, etc.) do victims of this type of crime experience? How does it impact society as a whole? Victimization Policy What has been done to address this victimization? Specific legislation? Policy? Court/sentencing components? Are services available for victims? What kind? * The information below is about the specific violent act and victimization you selected. This portion should include an in depth look about the violent act and the victimization associated with it. It should include: – Who, what, when, where, why information about the event. Be specific and describe what happened. Be critical and consider this information based on everything we have talked about this semester. This component is not to glorify or bring attention to the offender(s), it is simply to describe the incident. – Information about the victims (in a similar fashion as above) Again, this is not a section to be gory or overly descriptive in a negative way. Look at this through the lens of a victimology course. – Critically examine how the violent act and the victimization were addressed by the media. How was it covered? Why? What was focused on? In your opinion, do you think the media addressed it correctly? Why or why not? General Paper Information Your paper is to be at least 4-6 pages (not including a required title page or your references, you DO need both however). This means that anything less that 4 full pages of text will result in a deduction of points and anything more than 6 full pages of text will do the same. Your paper should be written in Times New Roman 12-point font with normal 1 inch margins. Your paper should be double spaced (please remove the extra space between paragraphs). You are to use APA style for your in-text citations and for your reference page. You DO NOT need an abstract, running head, etc. My concern is that you are using APA style for the references. You may use the headings I listed above or create your own headings. Your paper should be written in essay format, so not just one long paragraph. You must use scholarly references throughout your paper to support your statements and opinions. It is imperative that you be able to support your ideas with the appropriate research and material. You must use at least 6 scholarly references for this assignment. You book can be used as a reference, but does not count toward the required 6. Scholarly references include textbooks, journal articles, and official websites. Again, these references must be cited in APA style in the text of your paper as well as on your reference page.
